Q: What is the future of menuBUS?

A: menuBUS is no longer being developed. It will continue to work just fine for customers who purchased it, but no further updates are planned.

Q: I’m running an operating system 10.14 and higher and menuBUS isn’t working?

It could be that you haven’t granted access to menuBUS to access the microphone. To confirm menuBUS has permission to access the microphone, navigate to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Microphone.
You should see menuBUS in this list of applications with microphone permissions.
If menuBUS is in this list, but still doesn’t function then quit menuBUS and run the following command in terminal.app

tccutil reset Microphone com.greenroomproductions.menuBUSV2

Re-open menuBUS, and you should be prompted to grant access to the microphone.
menuBUS isn’t really using your microphone, but the virtual audio driver it installs appears as a microphone to the system, so it still requires this permission to function.

Q: menuBUS works with iTunes and Spotify, but it doesn't work with app X

A: Any application that gives you control over which output it uses, you will need to set to use the menuBUS driver in that applications preferences. For example - iTunes is an app doesn’t give you this control, it always outputs to your system output. An application like a DAW requires you choose your output though - So in this case you must choose menuBUS.

 

Q: menuBUS appears as a stereo output in my DAW. How do I access the rest of my interface outputs?

A: To access the rest of your outputs you need to do the following.... *

 

Create Aggregate Device

Create an aggregate device by pressing the + button in the lower left hand corner of "Audio MIDI Setup" which can be found by doing a spotlight search.

Then add the device which you would normally use in your DAW into this aggregate device by clicking the check mark and then also add the menuBUS driver to the aggregate device.

Now rename the device to whatever you would like!

Now select the device you created as you output device in your DAW.

menuBUS was the last device added to the aggregate device, so we now need to set out master output as the channels we are outputting to, which in my case is 13-14

*For some reason this doesn't work well with UAD Interfaces. For users with UAD interfaces I recommend trying the fantastic Rogue Amoeba app "Loopback" to route the audio into menuBUS.

Q: When menuBUS isn't set as my system output is it still having an effect on the sound of my interface?

A: No. menuBUS can be thought of as just another audio "interface" on the Mac. Just like when you plug a USB interface into your Mac you wouldn't expect it to change the sound of your inbuilt output, so to is that the case with menuBUS. 

Q: How do I uninstall menuBUS?

A: An uninstaller can be found in the settings menu which can be accessed by right clicking on the menu bar icon. Alternatively if you want to go digging then an uninstaller can be found by right clicking on the menuBUS package >Show Package Contents > Contents > Resources > menuBUS Uninstaller.app

To manually uninstall menuBUS and it's components delete the following files the steps below.

  • ~/Documents/menuBUS (Pro).nosync (This is the folder that holds all your presets, and settings)

  • /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/HAL/menuBUS Driver.driver

  • /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components/menuBUSDelay.component

  • ~/Applications/menuBUS (Pro).app

  • /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.greenroomproductions.menuBUSHelper.plist

  • /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.greenroomproductions.menuBUSHelper

  • Restart your computer

Q: Does menuBUS prevent my system from sleeping?

A: No. menuBUS will only prevent your computer from sleeping when audio is passing through it. After a few seconds of no audio, menuBUS will allow your computer to sleep.

Q: Why can't I see my the AU Plugin I just installed in menuBUS ?

A: If after re-launching menuBUS you still can't see the plugin you just installed, then try restarting your computer. This will register the component with the system and should then become visible to menuBUS and other apps that host AU plugins.
